Kelsey_Objects that relate to my childhood

This was my first stuffed animal I ever had. I named him Puffy and he was given to me by my Grannie Annie for my first Easter. I brought him with me everywhere I went when I was little, but I accidentally left him at my dentist office and a carpet store, but he somehow made it back to me :) Puffy still sleeps with me every night.

Crayons remind me of my childhood because my mom and I used to color together ALL the time. I used to get upset because she was better at coloring than me, but she assured me that it just took practice.

The book "Carl's Christmas" reminds me of my childhood because my family would read it every Christmas. It is a story about a loyal dog that watches a little girl when her parents go out for the night. The book has no words and relies on these amazing illustrations to tell the story.
I changed Puffy's location to make him become a pillow for my boyfriend rather than a stuffed animal. After years and years of being carried around he's not so puffy anymore and might not be that comfortable to sleep on.

Govinda_ What I consumed today!

You've probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so I started off with a blueberry yogurt and an apple while rushing off to class. Throughout the day I always have to have a water bottle with me, so I sipped on a large smart. I didn't really have time for lunch so I grabbed a small bag of cheddar chips and carrot sticks (lots of orange, I know). Then for dinner I had a veggie sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and cheese.
My days seem to pass by in a blur, so writing down everything I ate, made me make conscious decisions about what I was eating. I enjoyed the assignment, especially the suggestion to use dark paper and a light crayon.

Jessica T_Childhood Objects

I always had a coloring book as a child. I still color when I get a chance.

I learned to crochet when I was 7 years old. My friend from church taught me.

My favorite cereal has always been Honey Nut Cheerios. My mom still buys them for me to take back to college.

I changed the loction of the cherrios and glued them on a piece of paper to make a heart. We would do "cereal art" in elementary school. Cherreios went from being edible to art.

Rebecca Lynch - Lettering

The 5 words that I chose are things that I pass by everyday but never really pay too much attention to. I live in a house right behind Norman Hall and every day I walk in the building through the same entrance. On the wall outside, carved into the stone, is a fairly long list of names surrounded by stone embellishments and a bench. I think this side of Norman is rarely noticed by anyone; I have never seen anyone on that bench in my 3 years at UF. When I decided to think about 5 words I see around me, I immediately thought of this list.

1. Quintilian – He was a Roman writer who had great influence in education. He defined his own educational processed and argued for educational changes that are still relevant in today’s schools.

2. Da Feltre – He was an Italian teacher and humanitarian. He placed a strong emphasis on the need for physical education to be included with academics. He also included field trips!

3. Herbart- Herbart founded pedagogy as an academic discipline. The educational beliefs he held still bring about discussion with teachers today in relation to literature and critical thinking.

4.Froebel – Laid the foundation for modern education. He was the first to develop the concept of kindergarten.

5. Horace Mann – Mann was an American education reformist. He addressed problems with the public school system and brought them to light in the public eye.

I assumed that this list of names on the side of Norman would be a list of people who made lasting contributions to the education field. Even though these names are somewhat overlooked, I like knowing why they are there. I like the idea that in some small way we are paying tribute to the educators who came before us.

3 Objects (Imagination)_MarissaM

These pictures represent things that invoke my imagination. I chose to take a picture of my dog Tye, a piece of blank paper and a picture of the outdoors. My dog Tye has always fostered my creativity and imagination through drawing, painting and photography. Since I got him I have been trying different types of art that involves him or something relating to him. One of my favorite things is photograph him. He is such a joy to see running around and being a clown for the camera. The next object that I chose was a piece of blank paper. This paper represents everything that I can do with that blank sheet of paper from painting to drawing to folding. I decided to fold the paper into a paper airplane to represent it in a different form and function. The last object I chose to photograph was the outdoors. I just happened to walk into my backyard and find the flowers blooming in the sun and they were so inspirational. I love going outside and working out in the beautiful weather that we have in Florida. It always makes my imagination wonder and explore.

BritneyB_3 Childhood Memories

These pictures represent my two favorite books as a child and a basket that I got at the strawberry festival when I was younger. The basket represents my home town. Where the Wild Things Are is one of my all time favorite children books and I remember reading it when I was in elementary school. I used to love to read books and one that I loved to read to my mom was Theres a Wocket in my Pocket. This book has a lot of rhyming and its a lot of fun to read. All three of these items now sit on my book shelf. They are still important to me but I sometimes forget that they are there.

I read a lot as a child with the encouragement of my mom, who was an elementary teacher, and my actual teachers at school. This was my favorite book; I read it over and over when I was young. My second grade teacher even gave me a prize for being able to spell the title!

Every Friday night at my house when I was a child we would have movie/ice cream nights. Fridays were my favorite night of the week because of it, and I would always choose Aladdin because it was my favorite movie.

My younger sister and I colored all the time when we were young. We would always come home from school, finish our homework, and then start coloring and drawing in the endless amounts of coloring books that we had. We weren't allowed to watch much television, which looking back was a good thing because our time was much better spent drawing than just sitting in front of the tv.

I took this picture to show where my crayons are today, sitting in my box of school supplies. I hardly ever use them anymore, compared to what I used to. I guess with age my interests have changed, because I don't enjoy it as much and I don't have as much time for it unfortunately.

Amanda S_Parts of Building

For this activity, I chose parts of a building that people use every day that we take advantage of in modern times.

The first image is the lock of a door. I chose to photograph it from this angle because it had more detail than the actual deadbolt on the front of the door.

The second image is a shower head. I think everyone can agree that we all take indoor plumbing for granted.

The third image is a light switch. However, instead of photgraphing the switch, I photographed the plate in which it rests against the wall. The invention of the switch is just as modern as the invention of the lightbulb.

SARA S_ Passage of Time

I admit it. I'm like most Americans, I think — I tend to focus on Memorial Day for how it affects me (a school day when most people are at home, on vacation, or otherwise not chained to a desk). I know the true meaning, of course, and I understand its importance. But I don't think I really got it till I heard the stories of the people who called or wrote in today on NPR’s Talk of the Nation.

While so many people are at the beach today or enjoying a BBQ in their backyards, I spent a little bit of my afternoon thinking of the passage of time… the time it took someone to sign up for the military, the time it took for an army representative to drive to the family’s home to break the news, the time it took for a family to realize that life would never be the same, the time it took for someone to be grateful.

I thought a long time about a way to best document this… I have always heard that music captures so much of the moments in time and essence of an era, so I researched some of the songs that were popular from the time of each major war…songs that the families of the fallen soldiers might have heard.

Revolutionary War: Yankee Doodle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwHvyqNDUvE)

Civil War: Dear Sarah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31lzarvalgo&playnext_from=TL&videos=toZ8tCCkE7k&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_fresh%2Bdiv-1r-3-HM )

Free At Last

World War I: How ‘Ya Gonna Keep ‘Em Down on the Farm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgqVCJpRqWQ )

World War II: Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wiVkdVPGoY)

Korea: Sixteen Tons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUpTJg2EBpw )

Vietnam: Goodnight Saigon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qjzjhl-QztE)

Present Conflicts: I do not what song to choose for this one because only time will decide a song that captures the moments of this conflict…but maybe “Where were you?” by Alan Jackson?

Thank you!

Anne H_Passage of Time

I went home for a cooked meal at my parents, and I recorded me eating spaghetti. I recorded me eating a plate of spaghetti because time passes really fast when you are enjoying a meal with your family. I usually try to go home and have a meal once a week with my family so we can spend time catching up. This was a great way to document the passage of time because time goes by real fast when people are eating and talking.

Whitney L_3 Childhood Objects

My mom read Green Eggs and Ham to me all the time when i was a child. I really loved the thought of green eggs and ham!!

A Bug's Life was one of my favorite movies when I was younger. This movie always made me laugh and I enjoy watching it with the kids I babysit!

I played Candyland all the time when I was younger. To this day, it is still one of my favorite board games.

Unfortunately, I read books that are a lot more challenging than green eggs and ham. This represents the fact that I no longer read children's books and they are stacked up on an old bookshelf.

Suzie S_ Passage of Time

Spider on the Wall

This is a 5 minute progression of a spider, who, I might add, is missing one of his legs :(
It was very interesting to watch this animal. He (or she???) has been sitting outside of our apartment door all day, yet every time I walked by it didn't seem like he had moved at all. Once I sat down and observed him, I realized that he has been moving the entire time. As seen in the images, he moves his legs ever so slowly. Its funny how many things people take for granted until they actually sit down and appreciate them. This project was really eye opening because it made me realize I need to take more time just to sit and enjoy things.

Priscilla_Passage of Time

I recorded the passage of time while I was cooking eggs. I never really stopped
to think about what I was doing when I was cooking, but one thing I did notice was that eggs really do cook quickly and completely change appearance in a big way when they are cooked. It was really interesting to see.
