Haiku:

Orange fence, empty lot
Dirt whirling around the air
Flowers bring new life

My list includes the things I encountered on my walk home from Normal Hall to the inside of my house. It is a walk I make several times a day, but I discovered today that I usually fail to notice the little things. My haiku is about the empty lot that is next to my house. In the beginning of the year, an apartment complex was torn down and since then it has just been sitting there completely empty. It is just a huge field of dirt that is not very appealing to look at or live next to. While walking home today, I noticed something beautiful about this field of dirt that I never saw before. Flowers are blooming all over it! There is now a rainbow of different shades of purple and pink. When I stopped to actually look at the flowers I noticed that there were birds flying around them and singing. Noticing this very simple, yet beautiful thing reminded me that I need to take the time to not only acknowledge, but appreciate my surroundings. I was so focused on the ugliness of the empty lot that I failed to notice its beauty. I am sure this could be said for many things that I pass by everyday as well.
